Business Development Specialist at University of Missouri System
Mr. Ortiz is currently a Business Development Specialist for the University of Missouri-Extension/Small Business and Technology Development Program (SBTDC). In this role he provides technical and business advice to numerous small firms in the areas of business plan development, financial analysis, marketing and competitive analysis, FastTrac® entrepreneurial courses facilitation, SBIR/STTR proposal assistance, coaching and mentoring.
Prior to joining the University, Luis worked for the St. Louis Minority Business Council where he focused on helping small, minority-owned businesses develop and grow. He is also owner and president of Ortiz Resource Group, Inc, which provides consulting services to engineering firms engaged in the Food and Beverage, Pharmaceutical and Biotech industries.
Mr. Ortiz spent over 20 years in the engineering, architectural, construction (EAC) profession having worked as a planner, project/operations manager and executive for one of the nation’s premier engineering firms (Sverdrup Corporation, currently Jacobs Engineering in St. Louis). In this capacity Mr. Ortiz managed a Construction Management/Engineering company in Mexico City and served as Project Manager or Project Executive on a number of large, significant projects.
Previous positions include: VP of Planning and Environmental for a local engineering company; country analyst for the Central Intelligence Agency; and, Research Associate at the Construction Engineering Research Lab—a US Army Corp of Engineers laboratory.
Luis earned an MA degree in Economic Geography from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a BA, magna cum laude, in Social Sciences from the University of Puerto Rico. Luis is a Certified Economic Development Finance Professional (EDFP), a Certified Global Business Professional (CGBP) and has achieved certification in transformational coaching through the International Coach Federation (ICF). He is fluent in Spanish and conversant in Portuguese.
